The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) joined on July 06, 2024, the Global Patent Prosecution Highway (Global PPH or GPPH) program.

The GPPH is a multilateral cooperation program among intellectual property offices of 28 countries (after Brazil’s accession), which allows a patent applicant or owner who has obtained a favourable decision in one country to expedite the processing of their patent application in another, by sharing the examination among the offices.

Previously, the BPTO was a signatory to other PPH agreements individually signed with 23 foreign offices, which remain in force. With the GPPH, the number of partner offices will total 35.

The BPTO will soon publish new rules implementing the GPPH program, after which GPPH requests will be allowed.
